900 schoolchildren buried in Chinese earthquake | The Courier-Mail

From the page: "A death toll in the tens of thousands was feared last night after a powerful earthquake flattened schools and homes in densely populated areas of southwestern China.

"The quake, with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale, struck just before 2.30pm ... about 92 km from Chengdu, a city of more than 12 million people."

I've been to this region and the slopes are very sttep, making landslides very likely.

65-million-year-old asteroid impact triggered a global hail of carbon beads: …
Liked it May 11, 8:15am 1 review geoscience, impacts http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/norm...

From the page: "The asteroid presumed to have wiped out the dinosaurs struck the Earth with such force that carbon deep in the Earth's crust liquefied, rocketed skyward, and formed tiny airborne beads that blanketed the planet, say scientists from the U.S., U.K., Italy, and New Zealand in this month's Geology.

"The beads, known to geologists as carbon cenospheres, cannot be formed through the combustion of plant matter, contradicting a hypothesis that the cenospheres are the charred remains of an Earth on fire. If confirmed, the discovery suggests environmental circumstances accompanying the 65-million-year-old extinction event were slightly less dramatic than previously thought."
Why Emotional Memories Of Traumatic Life Events Are So Persistent

From the page: "Emotional memories of traumatic life events such as accidents, war experiences or serious illnesses are stored in a particularly robust way by the brain. This renders effective treatment very difficult. Researchers at ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich have now successfully tracked down the molecular bases of these strong, very persistent memories."

Researchers Observe Hydrogen-Bond Exchange
Liked it May 10, 7:44am 3 reviews chemistry, science http://www.physorg.com/news129471213....

From the page: "Hydrogen bonds are quite small, on the level of a few angstroms. They can also be passed between two different molecules very quickly, at speeds of tens of times per second. But in spite of these properties, researchers have recently observed hydrogen-bond exchange taking place in real-time."

(right) Image of the H20 and D20 dimers. The H20 dimer appears to fluctuate in the image because they exchange hydrogen bonds 60 times faster than the D20 dimers. The rate difference implies that the interchange proceeds via quantum tunneling. Credit: Kumagai, et al.
